I have a data set which Im trying to check if it is poisson distributed.
I read some posts here and online but they are a bit "heavy" on the statistics for a newbie in statistics like me, so I would appreciate answers who "keep it simple" as much as possible.
So I was thinking of calculating the index of dispersion for my data set and using the distance between it and 1 (the index for poisson distribution) to assess how close my data set is to being poisson distributed.
Question is, how accurate is this test? Are there are tests that are more accurate without adding too much computational complexity and effort to testing using this method?
